11.03.2013 Mixer successfully processes silicon carbide powder

Lindor, Dordrecht, the Netherlands, has supplied a specially adapted L4000 mixer to the Czech factory of CeramTec, the German producer of technical ceramics. The machine, which offers a useful mixing volume of 4000 litres, is required to homogenise highly abrasive silicon carbide powder while at the same time providing a uniform coating of oil. The mixer, employing the novel ‘gentle touch’ blending technique for which its Dutch manufacturer is internationally famous, exerts virtually no force on the SiC powder thereby minimising wear damage to the drum and internal components.
Lindor points out that three elements combine to create wear: an abrasive substance, movement and force. In this application there is plenty of abrasive substance (SiC) and movement is also present, though mainly in the form of the SiC particles rolling over the stainless steel surface of the mixing drum and over one another. Force, however, is minimal so wear is also ultimately minimal. Iveta Formankova, production manager at CeramTec’s Šumperk plant, said that the mixer had been performing well without any problems. www.lindor.nl
