22.07.2013 Acoustic cleaners reduce downtime for boiler economisers

Primasonics International, Penrith, UK, recently sold 12 curved acoustic cleaners (four PAS 60 models and eight PAS 75s) for installation on four boiler economisers operated by LondonWaste. This company recycles materials such as non-hazardous commercial and residential waste which is converted into green energy sufficient for the annual needs of 72,000 homes. Since 1994 it has diverted more than nine million tonnes from landfill. The waste-burning boiler economisers required periodic cleaning by grit blasting, an exercise taking three days at a cost of around £11,000 plus loss of production through downtime amounting to some £20,000 per day. Primasonics proposed the use of acoustic cleaners as an alternative solution, a system commonly employed to free blockages and hang-ups inside storage silos.

Three of these units were installed on a trial basis in the economiser of one of the boilers. Initially they were sounded for 25 seconds every eight minutes, operating in conjunction with steam soot blowers. However, thanks to their cleaning efficiency the steam soot blowing regime could be significantly reduced. Following the successful conclusion of these trials, LondonWaste ordered the 12 additional PAS acoustic cleaners. www.primasonics.com
