Schmidt sets up bulk logistics hub in Bahrain
Schmidt Middle East Logistics JLT, a wholly owned subsidiary of Karl Schmidt Spedition, Heilbronn, Germany, announced at the beginning of October that the company has selected Bahrain as the base for a dry bulk logistics hub in the Gulf region. A lease agreement was signed last week by Dr Wolfgang Hoppmann, CEO of Schmidt Middle East Logistics JLT, and His Excellency Kamal bin Ahmed, Minister of Transportation and acting chief executive of the Economic Development Board. Schmidt will lease about 400,000 square feet of prime land at the Bahrain Logistics Zone (BLZ) in order to set up an economical and efficient facility to store, handle and distribute different bulk materials such as polyethylene and polypropylene as well as catalysts and additives for chemical and petrochemical industries. Construction will take about a year with operations scheduled to start by the second half of 2014.
Schmidt received assistance from the Bahrain Economic Development Board to complete the company’s registration and licensing in the Kingdom. The Ministry of Transportation, Ports and Maritime Affairs, as the Kingdom’s maritime industry regulator, will continue to work with Schmidt in a support capacity. “This strategic partnership allows Schmidt and the BLZ to open the gates for highly specialised logistics in this region, with Bahrain playing an important role as a distribution hub for the GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council]. Ultimately, this will lead to a drastic increase in the number of companies with specialised expertise and operational skills, especially in the bulk market, setting up shop in Bahrain, which will help support Bahrain’s economy in the future,” said Dr Hoppmann.
