26.11.2012 Detection and extinguishing of sparks

The Manchester, UK, office of explosion protection specialist BS&B Safety Systems has announced the recent introduction of the SparkEx spark detection and extinguishing system. It has been designed to detect hot particles, sparks and glowing embers that might become an ignition source for a fire or explosion if allowed to travel through pneumatic ducting and conveyors. The company points out that just a single burning ember entering a dust collector, bin or silo is sufficient to trigger a dust explosion. The spark detectors react to both infra-red and visible light, picking up ignition sources passing through their field of view. This type of detector is plugged directly into the wall of the extraction duct or drop chute via a mounting adapter.
The extinguishing units used for this application generate a dense curtain of water spray across the pipework when a spark is detected in its protection zone. The extinguisher is fast acting and positioned so that the curtain of water will be complete and at full density across the duct. Other extinguishing agents can also be used such as inert gas, fast shutting gates and diversion gates. www.bsbsystems.com
