08.04.2013 Paddle vacuum drier with novel mixing action

Italvacuum, Borgaro (Torino), Italy, has introduced a new patented horizontal paddle vacuum drier called the Planex System®. Developed for vacuum drying of wet powders obtained from centrifuges or filter presses, it features an innovative system of operation which is especially suitable for production of active pharmaceutical ingredients, fine chemicals and intermediates. It comprises a fixed cylindrical chamber with an eccentric agitator providing two independent movements, capable of rotating on its own axis and tangentially to the cylindrical chamber as well. The double combined rotation ensures optimal mixing of the product, continuously renewing the surface of the mass exposed to evaporation, covering all the volume of the vessel. In this way the release of solvent vapours is facilitated and drying times are significantly reduced compared to conventional systems.
The unusual configuration of the agitator, characterised by a diameter much smaller than that of the drying chamber, not only allows for continuous circulation of the product but also limits mechanical and thermal stress, preventing localised overheating due to friction. Unlike with conventional driers, there is no risk of mechanical seizure which might give rise to metal contaminants. This ensures that even very delicate and thermo-sensitive products retain their purity without risk of degradation. The company stresses that the mechanical and thermal stress on the product is significantly lower than with traditional paddle driers equipped with concentric agitator. Electricity consumption is also reduced. The Planex System will be exhibited at POWTECH (Hall 4A, Stand 211). www.italvacuum.com
