08.07.2013 Cement plant converted to handle alternative fuels

Schenck Process UK, Doncaster, reports that it recently supplied a PSP (processed sewage pellets) feeding system at the Hope Works cement plant. The project was to introduce additional waste-derived fuels to supplement use of fossil fuels in the kiln and pre-heater tower. Use of PSP, which is a material high in calorific value similar to coal, required modification to the existing handling systems that have been used until now for coal. The solution combined the use of the existing Schenck Process MULTICOR® K coal feed system and the use of additional PSP MULTICOR K feeding systems, working in-line with the existing coal feeders. The new system allowed the same conveying lines to the kilns to be used, whilst also utilising proven equipment technology.

The ability to regulate the discharge of material from the MULTICOR K unit is controlled by a combination of load cells and a variable speed motor. An analogue signal from the main kiln control system sets the PSP discharge rate, allowing the feed to be controlled independently in conjunction with the coal feed system. The MULTICOR K mass flow meter uses the Coriolis force measurement principle to determine the mass flow within the device which monitors the weight of material that passes through the unit. www.schenckprocess.co.uk
