23.09.2013 Keeping sugar free of ferrous particles at Cristal Union

Eclipse Magnetics, Sheffield, UK, recently supplied an Auto-Shuttle magnetic separator to Cristal Union, one of Europe’s leading sugar producers, for installation at its Bazancourt refinery in north-east France. The machine, which uses high-intensity Rare Earth magnets, is capable of removing even the smallest contaminations that can occur in all production processes. Even though Cristal Union has many other detection and separation units throughout the process, installing this latest piece of equipment removed the infinitesimal risk of such material entering the company’s finished product. The magnetic separation equipment was installed on the company’s famous Daddy brand sugar production line. When the refined sugar is fed from a silo to the packaging line it passes through triple rows of Rare Earth 9000 gauss high-intensity magnetic separators, which are capable of removing sub-micron sized contaminants.

Owing to the volume of sugar being produced and the fact the line operates continuously, Eclipse had to develop a special unit with a 300mm inlet and 400mm outlet that would allow fully automated cleaning. As part of this process the magnetic cores remain in the process chamber and, when a cleaning signal is given, compressed air is then fed into each separator tube forcing the core to the other end of the unit. Having triple rows of magnets means that production is continuous. As one row is being cleaned two rows remain fully operational.
