05.05.2014 Cost-saving flameless explosion venting protection at Nestlé pilot plant

REMBE GmbH Safety+Control, Brilon, Germany, recently installed a Q-Rohr-3 passive dust explosion protection system at the new Orbe, Switzerland, pilot plant of Nestlé. Here, as part of the food manufacturer’s Twister Project, new muesli snack bars are being developed along with various other cereal products, prior to their general release. One of the main raw materials handled at the plant is oatmeal which poses a potential risk of dust explosion.
A major advantage of Q-Rohr-3 is that it incurs no running costs and is therefore far more cost-effective than active extinguishing systems, which require regular servicing. Nestlé development engineer Norbert Nemes said that the investment broke even within a matter of weeks. “All that is needed is an annual visual inspection, looking at the system from outside. The rest is handled by the Q-Rohr-3 monitoring unit which provides ongoing feedback to the process control system.” This will be among various explosion protection systems and components exhibited by REMBE at SOLIDS Dortmund (see below), Hall 4, Stand C12.   www.rembe.de
