26.05.2014 Bulk solids research facility to form part of Kansas State University

Kansas State University is planning a new $3.5 million, 13,000ft² facility in Salina, KS, that will benefit companies which design and utilise systems for bulk solids.  To be called the Kansas State University Bulk Solids Innovation Center, its primary partners will also include the Salina Chamber of Commerce and Salina Economic Development Corporation as well as several private companies. The university will be the key tenant with various offices and research suites for permanent and visiting academics and other users. Two local companies, Coperion K-Tron and Vortex Valves, will be initial anchor tenants, conducting both their own studies as well as collaborative research with the university.

The building will include open and enclosed laboratory areas to allow for collaborative and proprietary study projects. Kirk Schulz, Kansas State University president, said that part of meeting the university's goal to become a Top 50 public research university by 2025 will be nurturing and broadening the university's relationships with industries. “A facility and programmes for bulk solids research are greatly needed”, said Todd Smith, general manager of K-Tron Salina and vice president of K-Tron Global Systems. He said that this would be the only university-level research centre for bulk solids in the USA. www.coperionktron.com; www.vortexvalves.com
