H.Essers opens new multimodal terminal in Bergen op Zoom
H.Essers has inaugurated its new container terminal in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, strengthening its position as a key logistics hub for the handling, processing and distribution of goods including powders, granulates, flakes and pellets.
Strategically located on the Scheldt–Rhine Canal between the Port of Antwerp‑Bruges and the Port of Rotterdam, the facility is designed to support high‑volume flows of dry bulk materials across the North Sea–Rhine–Mediterranean Corridor. The €75 million investment provides an annual capacity of 325,000 TEU and replaces the company’s previous inland terminal in the city.
The site spans 6.5ha and includes a 350m quay, storage for 2,500 containers and dedicated infrastructure for temperature‑controlled and ADR‑classified cargoes. An additional 40,000 sqm of warehousing expands H.Essers’ total footprint in Bergen op Zoom to 200,000 sqm, enabling integrated services for bulk solids — from inbound container reception and intermediate storage to repacking, consolidation and onward distribution.
Two daily inland waterway services connect the terminal with Rotterdam and Antwerp, supporting efficient multimodal flows for manufacturers and processors of dry bulk materials. The operation directly employs 150 people and indirectly supports a further 300 jobs.
Unlike the former site, which sat behind the Burgemeester Peters Lock and a narrow navigation channel, the new terminal is located outside the dyke with unrestricted 24/7 access for larger vessels. This enhances reliability and throughput for customers shipping powders, granulates and other bulk solids across Europe’s industrial heartland
