BASF introduces recyclable plastic for flexible barrier packaging
BASF’s certified home-compostable ecovio® grades can be combined to create different barrier structures on paper and plastic, allowing manufacturers to tailor the effects. Barriers can be adjusted against grease, oil, waxes, liquids, oxygen and moisture, making it suitable for a range of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCGs) packaging.
Ecovio® grades are suitable for extrusion coating, film or sheet extrusion, as well as for lamination via extrusion, adhesives or heat, all in mono- or multi-layer structures.
Ecovio® also supports different end-of-life options, with some grades made from up to 80% bio-based content. Paper and board based packaging can be recycled in paper recycling streams. Flexible plastic packaging can be recycled in industrial or home compost without generating microplastics.

Michael Bernhard Schick, global business management Biopolymers at BASF, said: “With the new ecovio® portfolio, we offer manufacturers of flexible packaging a modular material toolbox that gives them greater design freedom: They can adapt barrier performance, processing technology and recycling possibilities to their specific application needs and sustainability goals.”
