EU to subsidise energy-intensive industries
EU members are now able to offer state aid to reduce a beneficiary’s extra electricity costs by up to 70%. The reduction applies to energy-intensive industries under ETS, such as manufacturing, land transport, and intra-EU sea shipping.
The Middle East crisis Temporary State aid Framework (METSAF) is to support member states’ industries with the cost of fuel and fertilisers that have risen sharply, compared to pre-crisis consumption. The eligible sectors under the METSAF are named in the Clean Industrial State aid Framework (CISAF), Annex 1 CEEAG, and includes manufacturing activities.
Member states can also determine aid by including factors like the size and type of operators’ activities and an estimate of fuel consumption, instead of providing actual consumption proof. Under this simplified option, each operator can receive up to €50,000.
Aid of up to 50% of total consumption is already available under the ETS State Aid Guidelines.
The METSAF will be in place until 31 December 2026.
