Mauser Packaging Solutions has opened a new reconditioning and recycling facility at the BASF site in Tarragona, Spain, further expanding its European footprint and deepening its collaboration with BASF. The facility is designed to enhance packaging circularity by reconditioning Intermediate Bulk Containers (IBCs) and producing high-quality post-consumer resin (PCR) from used industrial plastic packaging.

Located within the BASF site, the facility improves logistics by reducing transportation needs and associated carbon emissions. It also fosters operational synergies by leveraging existing infrastructure and sustainability initiatives, including advanced water treatment and green energy systems.

“This investment is a key milestone in advancing our sustainability goals and strengthening our partnership with BASF,” said Michael Steubing, President of Mauser International Packaging Solutions. “It allows us to offer faster, more sustainable packaging solutions directly from the source.”

The reconditioned IBCs will be used by BASF and other regional customers, contributing to waste reduction and packaging reuse. The site has received BAM certifications for reconditioning and cross-bottling, ensuring compliance with safety and transport regulations for handling hazardous goods.

Frank Burger, Head of SHEQ at Mauser International, added, “By operating on-site, we maintain the highest quality standards while reducing environmental impact.”

The Tarragona facility is part of Mauser Packaging Solutions’ broader $1 billion sustainability strategy, which includes innovations like the Infinity Series and Recover Syst-M program, aimed at reducing waste and extending packaging life cycles.
