19.10.2015 Metal contaminants removed from recycled plastic waste

Bunting Magnetics Europe, Berkhamsted, UK, has supplied a tailor-designed magnetic separation system to Stoke-on-Trent based HPR Ltd, which specialises in creating high-quality plastic feedstock materials by sorting comingled commercial, industrial and post-consumer waste into separated polymer streams of high purity.  Recycled plastics are available from HPR in a variety of formats, including bales, shred, regrind, agglomerate and compound. The annual design capacity of the plant is about 50,000t and currently HPR has an output of some 35,000 t/yr with its new second line.  This equates to around 5t/h of mixed product.

The mixed baled infeed material is sized with the +10mm fraction being passed under an overband cross belt magnet to remove and recover the ferrous metals.  The material is then processed over an eddy current separator, which removes the non-ferrous metals, and on to a series of optical sorters. The quality of the end product is dependent on the subtle tuning of the final stage separation system, which incorporates a powerful twin-pole overband cross belt magnetic separator. www.magneticseparation.co
