Carlsberg Bulgaria has taken a significant step in expanding its production capabilities with the installation of its first in-house canning line. Supplied by packaging technology provider KHS, the high-speed line supports the brewer’s strategy for growth and operational efficiency in a changing market landscape.

The company, formed in 2004 through the merger of two long-established Bulgarian breweries—Shumensko and Pirinsko—now produces over two million hectolitres of beer annually. Its product portfolio includes domestic brands and international labels such as Tuborg, 1664 Blanc, and Grimbergen.

With increasing consumer preference for canned beer, Carlsberg Bulgaria launched its canning operation at the Blagoevgrad facility in early 2023. The KHS line can fill up to 60,000 330ml cans or 40,000 larger cans per hour. According to Metodi Stoyanov, integrated supply chain director, the compact, less complex machinery improves production efficiency and ease of maintenance, currently achieving an OEE of 76%.

A key feature of the new line is its use of a flash pasteurizer rather than a traditional tunnel pasteurizer, offering energy and space savings while maintaining high hygiene standards. To prevent condensation on packaging, a compact heater gently warms the cans before tray packing.

Despite post-pandemic supply chain challenges, the installation proceeded smoothly and on schedule. Carlsberg Bulgaria has also signed a three-year service agreement with KHS, covering predictive maintenance and remote diagnostics through the ReDiS platform.

The project reflects Carlsberg Bulgaria’s aim to enhance flexibility, sustainability, and product quality in its operations. The partnership with KHS has delivered a strong foundation for its new canning operations, supported by technical expertise and ongoing service.
