Wolfson Centre launches COSHH compliance course for bulk solids handling sector

Professionals responsible for managing bulk solids, powders and dust in industrial environments are being invited to attend a specialist training course designed to help organisations meet their legal obligations under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations.
The one-day course, Achieving COSHH Compliance in Bulk Materials Handling, will take place on 10 December 2026 in Nether Langwith, Nottinghamshire and will be led by Dr Atul Sharma of the University of Greenwich's Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology.
Unlike many general COSHH training programmes, the course focuses specifically on the challenges posed by bulk solid materials, including powders, particulates, granules and dust.
It aims to bridge the gap between regulatory requirements and the practical realities of operating bulk materials handling systems.
The interactive programme combines technical instruction with presenter-led worked examples and a hands-on assessment exercise.
Delegates will work in small groups to complete a COSHH assessment based on a realistic bulk solids handling operation, using information about the material, process and workplace conditions provided during the session.
Topics covered will include dust generation and control, the COSHH statutory framework and DSEAR requirements, conducting COSHH assessments, understanding inhalable and respirable dust fractions, identifying exposure routes and the management of high-hazard dusts.
Participants will also examine how to read and apply safety data sheets, streamline assessments through material grouping, distinguish between COSHH and equipment risk assessments, and review and maintain compliance documentation.
According to the Wolfson Centre, the course is particularly relevant for maintenance personnel, managers, operatives, health and safety professionals, commissioning engineers and plant designers whose roles involve responsibility for controlling worker exposure to hazardous substances.
Organisers emphasise that where work with bulk solids, powders or dust creates a risk of exposure to substances hazardous to health, employers have a legal duty to assess those risks and either prevent or adequately control exposure.
Registration is available online, while companies wishing to book and pay by invoice can contact the Wolfson Centre directly. A discounted rate is available for colleagues booking together.

The course forms part of the Wolfson Centre's wider programme of specialist training for the bulk solids handling and processing industries. For further information, delegates can contact the centre on +44 (0)20 8331 8646 or email wolfson-enquiries@gre.ac.uk.
