Greif‑Velox unveils automated fine‑thread drum closure system

Greif‑Velox has introduced VeloDrum SafeClosure, a patent‑pending technology designed to automate one of the final manual operations in drum filling: opening and closing fine‑thread drum closures.
The system replaces a labour‑intensive step that has traditionally limited standardisation and process reliability.
VeloDrum SafeClosure converts the task into a fully monitored sequence comprising six stages. A vision system first identifies the bung position, after which a centring ring aligns with the opening. A positive‑pressure test then verifies correct sealing before a torque‑monitored screwdriver engages and opens the closure.
Once filling is complete, the system automatically repositions and tightens the closure. Torque and screw‑in depth parameters confirm correct tightening, and any faulty engagement triggers an ejection mechanism that places the plug beside the bung in a controlled manner.
A notable feature is the system’s ability to handle plastic closures, which are prone to jamming during automated tightening.
A springless pneumatic holder stabilises the closure and reduces the risk of snagging as the screwdriver retracts.
Adjustable torque settings allow operators to adapt the system to different drum and closure types, including steel drums with 2‑inch threads and plastic drums with BCS 56 x 4 and BCS 70 x 6 closures. Reconditioned drums can also be processed if the bung opening remains intact.
The technology is suitable for integration into automated filling lines, can be retrofitted into existing installations and is approved for use in hazardous areas.
Greif‑Velox expects demand from chemical and food producers, contract fillers and drum manufacturers seeking to eliminate repetitive manual intervention.
“With VeloDrum SafeClosure, we are closing one of the last remaining automation gaps in drum filling,” said Björn Voges, global marketing manager at Greif‑Velox. “A previously manual operation becomes part of a monitored, reproducible process. This creates reliable workflows and reduces recurring manual intervention along the filling line.”
