Volkmann enhances automated powder recovery and conveying for additive manufacturing

German powder handling specialist Volkmann has introduced an upgraded version of its PowTReX powder conveying system, aimed at improving the safe handling, recovery and recycling of metal powders used in additive manufacturing.
The latest generation of the PowTReX platform has been designed to support manufacturers operating multiple industrial 3D printers, where efficient powder management is critical for both productivity and material utilisation.
Metal powders represent some of the most challenging bulk solids to handle. In addition to flowability and contamination concerns, operators must minimise dust exposure and maintain strict safety standards due to the sensitive nature of many powder materials.
According to Volkmann, the system automatically transfers powder from storage vessels to the production process using vacuum conveying technology. Following printing operations, used powder is extracted, screened to remove oversized particles and returned to the manufacturing cycle for reuse.
The company says the closed-loop process reduces manual handling while improving powder recovery rates. Integrated screening technology removes agglomerates and ensures that only material meeting specification is recirculated back into production.
Containment remains a key feature of the system. Volkmann has developed the equipment as a fully enclosed, explosion-protected solution intended to safeguard both material quality and worker safety. The technology is compatible with a wide range of metal powders, including stainless steel, titanium, cobalt and nickel-based materials.
As additive manufacturing continues to gain traction across aerospace, medical and industrial sectors, demand is increasing for automated systems capable of storing, conveying and distributing valuable powders with maximum efficiency.
The upgraded PowTReX demonstrates how advances in powder handling technology are helping manufacturers reduce waste, improve safety and maximise utilisation of expensive raw materials, while supporting the wider industrialisation of metal additive manufacturing processes.
